CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Teaching a foreign language can be
most enjoyable and relaxing. Yet, most learners feel that an appropriate lesson
consists of traditional tasks with lots of writing and reading, listening to
the teacher and speaking with the fellow partners in class during activities.
When a lesson consists of a game, then it is not a lesson in the eyes of the
young learners and, therefore, it is greatly appreciated. Still, it is such a
lesson that gives the teacher the opportunity to help the learners acquire new
forms and lexis in the easiest and most effective way. It does not have to be a
complicated game with a board, cards and dice. What is simple is usually more
effective with the young learners who find it difficult to understand a long
list of rules. Very often a teacher finds activities in course books that can
easily be turned into a game. This game was based on a similar table in the
course book for Primary School, used as a drilling activity. By turning it into
a game, it becomes far more exciting and challenging.
There are many
media is use in teaching learning process. Usually media is use in teching
english to young learners because use it the teaching learning process will
more easily.Young learners will be interesting and enjoyable in class room. For
example Realia. realia is various kind of visual media which can be efectively
use by EFL and EYL.
Realia is a term used in library science and education to refer to certain
real-life objects.
On the one hand, interest in foreign
language education for children is spreading rapidly throughout Europe. There is
a recognizable trend towards lowering the starting age to Grade 1. On the other
hand, a lot of secondary teachers still seem to be quite skeptical as to the
benefits of such primary programs.
CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
The Implementation of Behaviorism
Theory in the classroom activities
Behaviorism theory is a learning theory which emphasizes step by step
learning process. In linguistics, this theory was followed by L.Bloomfield
dan B.F.Skinner. In learning, including learning language, this theory
emphasizes external factor rather than internal factor of the individual, so
that the students seem and tend to be passive learners and they will only wait
for external stimulation (teacher). Learning anything and by anybody (human or
animal) is just the same through stimulus responses mechanism. Teachers gives
stimulus, students just response it immediately, same as done in drill training
in English learning. The lesson which puts language structures (phoneme,
morpheme, words, phrase, and sentence) and language forms are the application
of behaviorism theory, because behaviorism theory more emphasizes language form
and structure rather than meaning and intention.
Behaviorism theory is one of learning theories which very applicable for
the students at elementary school and junior high school. We can apply this
theory in many ways, for instance using singing, game and so forth. This theory
will be more appropriate to be implemented using those variant of teaching
models.
In applying this theory, I chose game as the most entertain activities in
a classroom activities. One of the games that is more suitable with behaviorism
theory is namely “Estafet ekor kata” (simply continuing the last letter of a
word). This game is pretty simple to be done as this game is applied for elementary
and junior high school. The teacher can begin this game by offering or giving a
word and then immediately pointing a student to give or say a word which has
the same letter to the word given by the previous player. For example the
teacher start the game by saying the word “dream”, then the students pointed
should say “make, meal, man”, any words that have the same letter with the last
letter, yet this game should be controlled by giving time limitation for each
student. So then the next students must do the same thing. To make the
situation more exciting, the teacher may give an education punishment like
singing English song. This game can be applied in every condition of the
students. It could be in the beginning of the class, middle and even in the
last time of the class.
The game seems to be entertaining for the students and makes the class
more attractive. Although students can only say any words even they do not know
about its meaning, yet that is the implementation of this theory which
emphasizes the student to more learn in simple way and step by step. The
students are not acquired to know the meaning, they target is the students can
be more active by saying and giving any words appear suddenly in their lexical.
However, this game is appropriate for the class which contains the passive
students in order for the students to add their knowledge in term of English
language vocabularies.

CHAPTER III
CONCLUSION
Games have been shown to have advantages and
effectiveness in learning vocabulary in various ways. First, games bring in
relaxation and fun for students, thus help them learn and retain new words more
easily. Second, games usually involve friendly competition and they keep
learners interested. These create the motivation for learners of English to get
involved and participate actively in the learning activities. Third, vocabulary
games bring real world context into the classroom, and enhance students' use of
English in a flexible, communicative way.
Therefore, the role of games in teaching and learning
vocabulary cannot be denied. However, in order to achieve the most from
vocabulary games, it is essential that suitable games are chosen. Whenever a
game is to be conducted, the number of students, proficiency level, cultural
context, timing, learning topic, and the classroom settings are factors that
should be taken into account.
In conclusion, learning vocabulary through games is
one effective and interesting way that can be applied in any classrooms. The
results of this research suggest that games are used not only for mere fun, but
more importantly, for the useful practice and review of language lessons, thus
leading toward the goal of improving learners' communicative competence.
