Returning the Essence of University Students as the Agent of Change
By Fitrah Ramadhan
Nowadays, our nation, Indonesia, is facing up many complicated things in any aspect, such as social, economy, morality, health, education and so forth. For example, as the real evidence generally, in social and moral aspects, there are many criminals happen within our society, such as juvenile delinquency, rape, a big fight involving many people and drugs. Then in economical aspect, our nation has a big debt in World Bank which is increasing in every year, inflation, huge corruption and the low-rate income per capita and so on. Those cases which lead Indonesia in a very crucial condition are massively shown in every media consumed by any element of the society, start from the stake holders up to the teenagers as the next generations.
It cannot be denied that the process of moral decreasing is happening constantly in university students today. There have been many negative cases in moral side, such as drugs, free sex, and anarchism when they do demonstration. While, we know that actually university students are prepared to be the readiest next generation which will establish and develop our country. Anis Baswedan quotes that “Anak muda memang tidak memiliki pengalaman, oleh karena itu mereka tidak menawarkan masa lalu, tetapi mereka menawarkan masa depan”. University students are the only ‘agent of change’ in every aspect and ‘social control’ to build the prosperity for Indonesian society. Therefore, this essay focusses on the attempt and the effort to return the nature or the essence of university students as the agent of change.
The first effort to return the nature of university students as the agent of change is to study hard. A university student cannot be regarded as a true agent of change if they do not have a broad knowledge. To have this, certainly, the students must study hard every day by reading and writing anything they have mastered. By studying hard, the students actually have trained themselves and it could lead them to have a good potential thought which then they can contribute what they think or what they have for our better country in the future. It is impossible if we, as university students, are wanted to be marked as the agent of change if our daily activities do not even really mirror out our status as a student. In fact, many university students spend their time more for doing something which has even no correlation to support their study, such as hanging around with friends all night (having a cup of coffee, karaoke, playing futsal frequently), and visiting tourism places (mounts, beaches, lake, etc.). Those two things are the useless activity often done by university students nowadays. Indeed, it is okay to have those activities as the refreshing, but the frequency should be less than the time for studying, unless it might break our study if we fail to control and manage it well. And I am pretty sure that if you ask the students about the only commitment when the first time they went to university, they all, including me, would say “I must study very hard”. This was to raise up our spirit in grabbing our dreams and ambitions for our better future. In other words, Studying hard figures out and represents very much the preparation of the students to be the true agent of change.
The second thing when we want to return the essence of university students as the agent of change is that filling out and dress ourselves with a very good attitude or moral. As far as we want to be the agent of change which would build a better thing, before going to our nation as a big scale, we should start building ourselves to have a good moral. Let us imagine if we are being a leader while we have some bad attitudes, we will get lack of trust from the society which will impact to the society’s respect. Besides, a leader is meant the model which is to be followed by the society. Is that possible if we want to make a change for our society if we even do not get any respect and trust from our own people just because we have bad manner and attitude? I think it is very impossible. Conversely, having a very good moral to start controlling yourself for a good manner or morality will train you how to control other people.
Besides, as today is the globalization era, unconsciously, this modern era has continuingly formed the future young generation. Why is that so? Because in this globalization era, there have been many high technologies take place in our country and used massively by the students in particular which lead them easily to do such negative things and break their morality. For example, easily accessing interning using their gadgets drives them to open negative sites, online gambling, and receiving any bad information without any filter. In short, those actions are not the thing that are done by the human labeled as the agent of change.
The last simple thing to be done to return the essence of university students as the agent of change is that joining any organization which could bring them to have a very good leadership. Through joining the organizations whether inside or outside of their university, the students can learn how to work together in a group and they could learn how to organize a small group of people after they succeeded controlling themselves. When they control their own organization, they will get such a great experience in controlling other people in which then later on the students are ready to be the guidance for the society as the big scale when the time coming. We will never get the lessons how to organize people in the class, at least you are being the captain of the class for some small orders. The organizations students join in contribute very much in building the character of that students. Senge (1990:2 in Anam et al: 2012) stated that “ People continually expend their capacity to create the result they desire, where new and expensive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are continually learning how to learn together”. It shows that the education in organization has a very strong orientation to produce better human resources. Yet, the students should limit the number of organization that they join in, because joining the activities of many organizations within our academic study is definitely difficult to be handled. In line with this, Heru Basuki (2007, in Anam et al: 2012) argued that the university students which are too active to join many organizations have an inter-role conflict, so that the students which cannot handle the role conflict they are facing, there will be a tendency to have difficulty in playing their role in their class, then it decrease their scores. In my opinion, it would be better if each student join the organization which is in line with the major they are taking. For example, I am taking English letters as my department, then I join Advanced Debate Community (ADC) with my first intention is to increase my English skill, particularly in speaking. This organization influences very much toward the improvement of my English skills. Beside to improve my English skills, in ADC, we also learn the orientation and the system just like the other ordinary organizations. In other words, I can get two and even more benefit from my organization which can drive myself to have a good competence, capability, and also the leadership itself. Therefore, then, joining the organizations teaches and gives more experiences to build the students character to be fairly ready facing up the real society’s world as they also have a good leadership character.
Based on my evaluation above, I conclude that in returning the essence of university students as the agent of change, the students should avoid these following obstacles as the factors causing the loss of agent of change’s essence; the first is internal factor, lack of awareness to fix our own personality first which then we could fix the problem and handle other people in our surrounding. The second one is external aspect such as technologies which can bring them to easily access the sites and information which should not be accessed. Therefore, studying hard to have a broad knowledge and critical thinker, morality building to avoid useless activities, and joining some suitable organizations is a very good way to train our leadership and character building, so then we are preparing to be a true agent of change which has a real essence for our better future nation state.
