An Interpretation of John
Wilmot Poem’s All My Past Life
--Poem
All My
Past Life
By John Wilmot
All my past life is
mine no more,
The flying hours are gone,
Like transitory dreams given o'er,
Whose images are kept in store
By memory alone.
The flying hours are gone,
Like transitory dreams given o'er,
Whose images are kept in store
By memory alone.
Whatever is to come is
not,
how can it then be mine?
The present moment's all my lot,
And that as fast as it is got,
Phyllis, is wholly thine.
how can it then be mine?
The present moment's all my lot,
And that as fast as it is got,
Phyllis, is wholly thine.
Then talk not of
inconstancy,
False hearts, and broken vows,
Ii, by miracle, can be,
This live-long minute true to thee,
'Tis all that heaven allows.
False hearts, and broken vows,
Ii, by miracle, can be,
This live-long minute true to thee,
'Tis all that heaven allows.
--Analysis
I am
always very interesting to talk about past
life, because there will be imagination there. Imagine everything that
presents in my past life. All events are from happiness until crying. Some
policies and all bloomers that are I did in my past time. It is always
something interesting and pleasant for me. I am always simper when my thought
ran away in my past time way. Why am` I always interested in past time? My answer
is because through past time, there will be much wisdoms that we can take from
in order to put in our future to get better future. Talking about past time, in
my opinion, John wants to tell the reader about his past time. What he feels
about his all past time. Then, let’s start to talk this poem totally and
deeply.
Starting with the title, All My Past Life, a short and direct
sentence, is a sentence which reflects something meaningful. Why do I state it
with word “short” and “direct”? My reasons are; All My Past Time the meaning is everything in my old life,
everything in past time. It can be everything that happened in past time. Second,
it is direct sentence; it means that the readers can give same interpretations
totally and directly for this title. On the other hand, some of many readers
can catch other meaning that different from the unity of its meaning. In short,
this sentence is palpable, short and direct sentence. Then, let’s we discuss the
meaning of word by word. First, All,
this word is used by John to show the meaning that it is “everything started
from the beginning until the end that is his present time”. In conclusion, he
wants to tell his past time totally. Second, My, this word is used by John to show the meaning of “ownership”.
so that My word’s meaning is the past time that mine, mine is John’s.
Third, Past, this word is used by
John to show the meaning “old”. It means that the time that John wants to tell
in his poem only in past time, old time, not present or future time. Fourth, Life, this word is used by John to show
the meaning “existence”. It means that something that ever present in his life.
This word modify Past word.
Let’s
see and discuss about the first stanza! Starting from the first line, All my past life is mine
no more, in my opinion, in this sentence, John
starts his poem with sadness. This sadness reflects about his longing with his
past life. Why do I mention it with a longing? Because from this All my past life is mine no more sentence
John wants to show his losing about something that ever came and be his own
self. Then, second line, The flying hours
are gone, my first impression about this sentence is this sentence is
lasing the first line. John wants to show and affirm his idea in the first line
with this sentence that “no more” affirmer again with words “flying” and
“gone”. It means that John’s longing was fly and gone. This sentence also shows
his sadness again even more lasing again with the words that contains in the
words “flying” and “gone”. This sentence means that John’s life which is not his
anymore has flied and gone. Now come to the next line is third line, Like transitory dreams given o'er, same
as the second line, my first impression about this line is this sentence is lasing
the first and second line. So, the first, second, and third line are supporting
one another. The reason is the third line sentence’s meaning is as parable from
the first and second line. This evident is showed by the word “transitory
dreams”, and this line meaning’s is a kefanaan that
was imagined through a dream. A dream is something which does not become real
yet and it is still like illusions, or it could
be in the past time as a dream which has been gone. It also could be the future
as a deep hope that even does not happen yet.
Next, the fourth line, whose images are
kept in store, this sentence still being lasing from the first until third
sentence. That lasing is showed by word “kept”. This word also shows sadness
and affirms those last lines. It means that John feels losing about something. Then,
the last line is By memory alone. In my
opinion this line explains more the line before it. This word continues words Whose images are kept in store.
Now, I’m going to
step in next stanza that is second stanza. The first line in this stanza is whatever is to come is not, in my
opinion this stanza was opened by sentence that has relation with the previous
stanza. Here, John is still talking about his sadness about his past life.
Again, he offends about “losing” in this poem. It means that his sadness about
something lose that he has ever had and existed in his life which is now
already gone. His sadness and losing is affirmed
by the word “to come is not”. It reflects that, anything about his life which only
comes to be disappearing. Besides, it still has relation to the sentence in the
prvious stanza. It is Like transitory
dreams given o'er. Second line is the sentence How can it then be mine?. This line is closely related to the
previous line Whatever is to come is not.
This line means is the author, john, wants to show that his losing is
impossible to be back anymore. Third line is The present moment's all my lot. This line explains previous line.
It means that the existence of this sentence contributes two previous
sentences. In this sentence, John wants to tell everything that presents in his
present time is his fate. Fourth line is And
that as fast as it is got. This sentence continues reflecting the previous
sentence, and supports the explanation about it. The sentence’s meaning is
arrival of his present time where is being his fate and destiny. It comes as
fast as it is got. I mean that his present time, which has been his fate, comes
quickly to shift his present which later will be his past time as well. Now we
come to the last line of this stanza. Phyllis,
is wholly thine, in my opinion, this sentence is answer of John’s sadness
in the previous stanza. John says in his poem in this line that: “God,
everything is yours”. In my opinion the meaning is everything in john’s life
from the past time in his past life, his present time, until his future time is
God’s.
Then, I will try
to interpret the last stanza in John’s poem. The first line in the last stanza is Then talk not of inconstancy, he starts
in this stanza with the new thougt. It means that new argument that still has
correlation with the previous stanza but more than simply a new idea. He said: Then talk not of inconstancy, in this
sentence he tries to explain his new idea by does not leave continuity value
with her thoughts in the previous sentences. In this sentence, john wants to
tell that everything in his life is a inconstancy. It means that everything in
his past, present and future life are only for a while or we can say it is not
an everlasting. Second line is False
hearts, and broken vows, In this sentence he tries to imagine his
falseness. Why I am here as a “falseness”? the reason is when he said false
heart n broken vows, it reflects as a
pretense owned by human. For example, when human’s emotion actually wants
happiness within his or her past time still come and exist in his or her life.
in fact, the past has been gone and will always be gone changed by the present
which is probably same as the happiness in his past time. Third line is Ii,
by miracle, can be. This sentence is an answer for two previous sentences.
John wants to tell the reader that all impossibilities in the two previous
sentences are probably able to be a possibility of “a miracle”. Therefore, the miracle will
toward against all the impossibilities. Fourth line is This live-long minute true to thee sentence. This sentence can be
an outstanding in this poem. Because, this sentence answers all questions in
this poem that John wrote. In this sentence, John tells that this all long life
is yours (God). In this case, he is surrender that in every life either in the
past, present or future, bad and good, happiness and sadness is God’s. as like
john draws the answers over his fidgetiness that happen in his life. those all
are reflected through this poem. The fifth is the last line is 'Tis all that heaven allows, sentence.
With this last sentence John wants to tell the reader that he wants to make
this poem with happy ending. This sentence looks like entertainers over all
sadness that he wrote in this poem. Ongoing, he wants to appreciate his
gloominess with a great gift in the future called heaven. As a starting point
of his fidgetiness in his life, it will be possible if it will change paradise
on his life’s end.
Based on my interpretations above, I conclude that
this poem basically draws the missing of the Author’s past time. However, he
wants his past life back, but he totally aware that it is impossible happens.
Finally, he gave an outstanding in his poem that everything in his life is God’s,
and he stated in the last lines as an entertainer for his sadness…
